The division between the Protestant and the Catholic worlds, which took place five hundred years ago, shaped a new frame in Europe. In both communities the fundamental aim was to discipline the people, to teach to believing across persuasion and, if not possible, through intimidation. In this context, the conjunction of the printing and the engravings generated an extraordinary capacity to transmit new ideas to a population that in majority could not read.
